en عمومى General پژوهشي Research <div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:2;"><b><span lang="EN-ID">Background: </span></b><span lang="EN-ID">Nurses&rsquo; motivation bridges individual and organizational factors with patient safety practices, yet inconsistent findings on its mediating role highlight the need of further context-based investigation. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the mediating role of motivation in the relationship between nurses&rsquo; professional competence and work environment with patient safety management activities.</span><br> <b><span lang="EN-ID">Methods: </span></b><span lang="EN-ID">This cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in three hospitals in Malang Raya, East Java, Indonesia from August to September 2025. The study sample included 225 nurses recruited by proportional<i> </i>quota sampling. Data were collected using Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) scale, Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI), Safety Motivation Tool, and Safety Care Activity scale. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modelling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS version 4.0, applying a significance level of 5% to examine the relationships among the variables. </span><br> <b><span lang="EN-ID">Results: </span></b><span lang="EN-ID">Professional competence significantly affected motivation (&beta; = 0.354, p = 0.000) and patient safety management activities (&beta; = 0.082, p = 0.042). The work environment also showed significant effects on motivation (&beta; = 0.177, p = 0.005) and patient safety management activities (&beta; = 0.119, p = 0.002). Motivation had a strong effect on patient safety management activities (&beta; = 0.734, p = 0.000) and significantly mediated the relationships between professional competence (&beta; = 0.260, p = 0.000), work environment (&beta; = 0.130, p = 0.007), and patient safety management activities. The model demonstrated good fit (SRMR = 0.059).</span><br> <b><span lang="EN-ID">Conclusion: </span></b><span lang="EN-ID">The results emphasize that enhancing nurses&rsquo; professional competence through continuous learning and career development programs is crucial to strengthening motivation and improving patient safety management activities.
